OpenID, groups and Social Media reached Doodle

October 1, 2010

As from today, you can create a new MyDoodle account by using the most popular third-party logins: Google, Yahoo, Facebook and the generic OpenID. Choosing one of those when signing in, and after verifying your ID, Doodle will automatically create your account. The password of the third-party providers are not passed on to Doodle – and you skip making up one more login and password. If you already have a MyDoodle account based on the same email address as the third-party login, Doodle will recognize this and merge both accounts.

Email-Groups are now supported by Doodle too: when inviting participants via Doodle (this gives personalized participation links that can’t be changed by others and this gives the posibility of tracking and reminding for premium users) you can now use the same groups that you’ve defined in your address book (today only Google users, by the end of October also for Outlook users).

Finally, Doodle is getting more social. We introduced more possibilities on Doodle.com for you to share your scheduling successes on Facebook, Twitter, or via email. Help us spreading the word!

Scheduling functions improved, API documented, Facebook terminated

August 26, 2010

With our latest release, we simplfied the administration of a Doodle-poll: the two admin functions Edit and Close are now directly accessible on the participation page. With that, we want to encourage you to complete the scheduling process as soon as you fixed the final option – only so, all tentatively saved options will be removed from the calendar automatically (if the personal calendar is connected to Doodle). Closed polls can be reopened if necessary. Another improvement applies to the new calendar view where you can now also use the suggest function. It automatically picks the right answer, based on your availability in the calendar.

We are convinced that the calendar integration is also useful for a variety of calendars and front ends that might not yet be supported by Doodle. We therefore heartily encourage developers to have a look on our newly documented Calendar- and Contacts API.

From now on, Doodle is only present on Facebook with its company page: the Doodle Facebook Application has been terminated and the users of the app have been informed separately. Please visit us on Facebook: we love you when you like us!

Next chapter of calendar connect: Outlook Connector open to public

July 28, 2010

We launched our first Outlook Plugin in March 2009 at the same time as the calendar connect via ICS feeds. Today, we are happy to open to the public the new Outlook Connector beta that fully integrates with the calendar view launched one month ago.

Outlook users can now start and answer meeting invitations directly in the calendar view and automatically reserve tentative and definitive events in their calendar. It is your choice whether to connect full calendar details or only free and busy data with Doodle. On top of that, you can share free and busy data with select contacts via Doodle – this is particularly useful for individuals who don’t share a calendar infrastructure. You can also connect your address book so you don’t have to manually type e-mail addresses when sending meeting invitations via Doodle.

Connect your Outlook Calendar today! You’ll need Outlook 2007 or 2010 and a free MyDoodle account. The previous Outlook Plugin is not going to be supported beyond end of August.

Here are two more nice little improvements for the calendar view:

  • When you start a meeting invitation in the calendar view, all time slots you select will by default be the same length as the previous one. So it’s just a click, not a drag, for all consecutive option slots.
  • Doodle will remember the calendars you selected and will show them by default when working in the calendar view the next time.

The “closed beta” phase of the Doodle Outlook Connector was short and positive: we have heard from a large number of interested users who provided us with so much valuable feedback that we’re now able to open the beta to all users. We’d like to thank all of the early participants!

Be sure to also check out the video and additional information about the new calendar connect and view functionality.

Facebook, premium, and Google news

July 28, 2010

Doodle’s Facebook application won Facebook’s German Application Contest just one month after it launched and is still used today although users clearly prefer our main service at Doodle.com. That’s why we’ve decided to fade it out by the end of August. Read more

Don’t be sad, though! You can still be a fan of Doodle on Facebook. Stay tuned to that page because we’ll inform you there about news and activities!

Upon popular requests, we now offer our premium customers the means to download PDF invoices with one click from the MyDoodle admin page. Both Premium Doodle and Branded Doodle customers can download all invoices of their current as well as past subscriptions.

Another change concerns Google Analytics. Google recently announced anonymized IP statistics and that’s what we’re going to use from now on. That means that Google and Doodle will only process aggregated usage data and not data linked to specific IP addresses. Also read our strict privacy policy.

Biggest step forward in the development of Doodle

June 24, 2010

The new face of Doodle is out now: a calendar view that enables users to directly start and answer meeting requests with all relevant information up to date at one place. You can connect your personal calendar, as well as any additional calendar via an ICS feed. This can be the family agenda, a colleague’s calendar or a public feed with national holidays. Finally, you can share free and busy data on Doodle with selected persons – regardless of the calendar system they use – and make it available with a click.

The new functions will be fully available for Google Calendar. Other online calendars like Yahoo!, Windows Live, and Apple’s MobileMe can be connected using ICS feeds from and to Doodle. Rollout of the Outlook Connector will start with a private beta phase initially and soon be opened as a public beta.

People who organize their events without electronic calendar can still use the common mode with the tabular display, also when a meeting request was sent from the calendar view. Users can also switch between the calendar view and the classic tabular display.

Don't confuse Google rescheduler with online scheduler Doodle

March 22, 2010

Last week, the Google Calendar Labs Smart Rescheduler was covered by the media. We tested this feature and found it helpful for rescheduling a meeting. We also found that it shouldn’t be confused with an online scheduler like Doodle – it’s actually not intended for that type of use. We believe that a full online scheduling tool should comply with these three following fundamental characteristics:

  • Booking times in your calendar must not be over-automated because calendar information is usually too personal to be processed without the participant’s hand in the matter.
  • For complex meeting setups (i.e. starting with three or more people), it is very efficient – and transparent – to take out the coordination process from each participant’s calendar (extracalendar scheduling). It’s about finding a consensus, a task no algorithm can do for you.
  • And, last but not least, scheduling will only work broadly when tools work with all running electronic calendar types (intercalendar scheduling).

Lotus Notes widget out of beta

March 10, 2010

R4_lotus_software_colorWith our latest release, we proudly took the Doodle for Lotus Notes widget out of beta status. Lotus Notes users can now take full advantage of the seamless Doodle-integration: Doodle-polls can be initiated and replied to directly from Lotus Notes and the meeting time agreed on can be saved with one click in the calendar.

By integrating Doodle into Lotus Notes, we have given a tremendous number of organizations, including small businesses and large enterprises, the means to close the gap between disparate calendars and to make scheduling virtually effortless. Michael Snijders from Chocolats Camille Bloch SA, one of the earliest adopters of the widget, said:

This is an excellent widget. Finally, we can use the full power of Lotus Notes which allows us to schedule our meetings internally, and with the rest of the world! I initially began using Doodle for private meet-ups, but now I’m able to use it professionally as well.

Improved Google Calendar integration

February 25, 2010

We’ve improved the way Doodle integrates into Google Calendar. If you use Google Calendar, you can get the following features:

  • When you participate in a poll, Doodle will suggest how to fill in the poll based on the information in your Google Calendar. You can also choose examine the relevant calendar information.
  • You will have the option to automatically add tentative appointments to your Google calendar for all the time slots that you accept on Doodle.
  • Once the final date and time is fixed, Doodle will remove the tentative appointments and add the final date and time to the calendar.

In summary, the new integration adds new functionality and is considerably faster and more reliable than the old way. And it takes only a second to set it up: Go to your MyDoodle settings and click “Connect new Google Calendar”, confirm, done. If you don’t have a (free!) MyDoodle account yet, register here now.

Doodle for the blind and visually impaired

February 1, 2010
Source: Intel

One of our main goals is to provide online scheduling for everyone. Together with the Swiss organizations AGILE and Egalité Handicap we have been able to make Doodle more accessible for blind and visually impaired individuals to use the scheduling tool with the help of specific website reading devices. These changes also helped us improve the overall structure and code quality of our web pages.

“The improved accessibility offered by Doodle enables blind and visually impaired people to easily attend meetings and other events,” AGILE writes in its press release. “This is a tangible act for better integration and equal treatment of users.”
